Both Jack and I were short-order cooks in our teenage years, but we arrived too late for the golden age of lunch counter lingo, also known as dinerese or dinerspeak. That's the snappy patter thrown about by sassy gum-cracking waitresses in old-time diners who'd yell back to the cook:
"Jack Benny, Takes a Flower! Frog Sticks and Sissy Nut! Brown Cow, Fluff It, Break It And Shake It! Give it Shoes!"
"Burn One, Drag It Through the Garden and Pin a Rose on It! Cream It and Paint It Red!! Cold Spot, and Ice the Rice!"
And, of course, the classic:
"Adam and Eve on A Raft! Sink 'em! Cup o' Joe -- Hi-test! Throw It In the Mud!"
It didn't make a whole lot of sense, but eating in diners back then sure was more colorful. And as far as I can tell, this is the most complete listing of American diner slang of the mid-20th century on the web ... because I compiled all the slang off every site that I could find. Go me!
Most recent entries have a light green background, but only in the lingo-to-English glossary.
